Users review: What a wonderful accomplishment of a film by James Marsh (Man on Wire) who brings such depth and beauty to the life/love story of Stephen and Jane Hawking. The film is adapted from her novel on their life and brings forth much of the love and tenacity necessary to care for and love someone going through great physical struggles over time. Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones give fantastic and intimate portrayals of Stephen and Jane during their courtship and lives together. My vote for best film at this years Toronto International Film Festival. In Q&A after film James Marsh told a great story about Stephen Hawkings reaction to the film where he gave the response that it was in largely genuine... and Eddie Redmayne said that Stephen Hawking after viewing the film allowed them to use his actual voice instead of their approximation for the film that they had produced. The most touching was that Hawking had tears to be wiped away after viewing which will give to you a sense of how genuine this film is.

Users review: Its an amazing work and everything I had hoped for. Two childhood best friends embark on a road trip back to their hometown after one of them learns he has inherited a large sum of money from his recently deceased estranged father. This film was nearly perfect, but sadly still not made for everyone. Its an important film, as well as very entertaining. It is very light-hearted and it isnt complex at all as all the characters struggle against a system that has perpetuated many falsehoods. My only problem with the film was the supporting cast, but its still okay. The plot is not as well thought out as the original, but it still does the cast well.

Material like this calls to be made into a film. Im so glad that these three answered the call.What Steve Carell achieves as John DuPont is not just a performance by a full embodiment. With strength and precision, he understands DuPont, a man with an extreme outlook on reality. Carell doesnt just ask us to sympathize with John, between his awkward behavior and his constant yearning to impress his familys legacy, he demands our understanding. If I didnt already know about the film for the past two years, I wouldnt have recognized him. His performance is completely focused and profound. Looking at the way he carries himself through the film, you are witnessing one of the purest creations of a character this year. When hes not on-screen, youre secretly wishing he was.When it comes to Channing Tatum, I have to admit that I never FULLY understood the appeal. Discovered the young ferocious actor in Dito Montiels A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints nearly a decade ago, and afterwards was only mildly entertained by his presence in films like 21 Jump Street and Side Effects. What he does in Millers film is something beyond anything I could have ever thought he could do. Tatum doesnt just do an imitation, he channels the inner workings of a man desperate for more. His peculiarities are richly on display as he yearns for a father figure outside of the shadow of his more successful brother. He embraces the odd DuPont, against all logical instincts, but you can see exactly why he would feel so compelled to do so. Mark Ruffalo gives Dave the ticks and beats of an original creation. Picking at his beard (something I know all too well), constantly engaging in team leadership, and hugging his younger brother whose more of a son than anything. Ruffalo mounts himself on the perch of a loving brother just trying to create success for himself and his family. This is another solid outing for him. Co-star Vanessa Redgrave, as Johns fragile mother, is marvelous in her short scenes while Sienna Miller adds a needed dynamic to understanding both Mark and Dave. The two women both offer compassion and balance.Foxcatcher is terrifying, disturbing, and utterly engaging. A slowly unraveled piece that is risky but pays off immensely. Its cautious yet strictly well-defined as a character study. Like all great films with great performances, its element of truth is plainly apparent. On the gray-skied farm, we will get to know three interesting men, some of which, well never truly understand.

Rachel McAdams is known for her romantic movies, but this was just more and more than that.About Time was one of the greatest movies I have ever seen. Users review: I set out seeing this with the assumption that it would be the normal romantic comedy that we have seen 1000s of (I dont mind seeing them, I like most kinds of comedy, as long as it is not too childish), but it was not. Some reviewer are giving low scores because of no depth of characters, plot holes etc etc, but come on - did you really expect that from this kind of movie? This (kind of-) movie is like a simple action movie, you must not expect too much realism, it is simply made for making you laugh. I know I did.Thankfully, this movie is not so much about revenge which has been so many times, but rather about the development of the odd friendship between the ladies and their conspiracy towards the man in the film, Mark, played by Nikolaj Coaster-Waldau.Cameron Diaz is actually rather good in her role, and her character Carlys way of dealing with the situation is quite refreshing (trying to just walk away). Leslie Mann is hilarious and together they pulls through the movie. Kate Upton does not bring much to the movie though, but her role is also of a lesser part of the movie.Im putting a 8, maybe it only deserves a 7.

Users review: Not much to like about this movie. Two seriously unlikable characters, one totally unbelievable plot, and about an hour too long. The main actors are practically emotionless and move like robots, I was so disappointed. The most interesting character (and well acted) was the lawyer. And there is NO WAY anyone could believe that a woman who arrived at a hospital covered in her kidnappers/rapists blood, was examined, dressed in scrubs, appeared in a ridiculous press conference the same day all while STILL COVERED IN BLOOD - just so she can do a shower scene at home! That and so many other awful scenes and dialogue ruined it. I never once believed that the main characters even fell in love, let alone spent 5 years together. Waste of time.

Users review: When I first heard about this film and its pedigreed credentials: Director Ridley Scott, Starring Michael Fassbender, Javier Bardem, Penelope Cruz, Cameron Diaz and Brad Pitt, I was excited to see it. However, because of the very poor reviews and box office performance Stateside, I have tempered my expectations before I went to see it. And so should you.The Counselor refers to the nameless character played by Michael Fassbender. He appears to be a very successful lawyer, happily engaged to a gorgeous, church-going girl (Penelope Cruz). However, for some reason this film never really completely discloses, he still felt the need to get himself involved with a Mexican drug cartel for additional cash, peppered with colorful characters, like the wild-haired Reiner (Javier Bardem), his slinky girlfriend Malkina (Cameron Diaz) and the urban cowboy Westray (Brad Pitt). Will the Counselor get away with both the girl and cash?When I saw in the opening credits that the script was by Cormac McCarthy, who was responsible for No Country for Old Men (which I did not exactly like), I braced myself for one puzzling and boring ride.However, it was not exactly all boring after all. There were those pockets of incredible tension and violence involving necks which you will not soon forget. Michael Fassbender was okay as the titular Counselor, but there was nothing about his character which was fully-explored. He is obviously greedy enough to risk everything he had to get himself involved in nefarious criminal activities, but we do not see why. So we end up not caring at all about him. We actually see other characters counsel him, than him counseling others.Cameron Diazs femme fatale character Malkina was unexpectedly well- developed. She is certainly no dumb blond bimbo here. Her scenes though were the most perplexing as to where she was coming from. She has a scene on the windshield of a luxury car that was as head-scratching as it was sensually acrobatic.Javier Bardem is really very comfortable playing these cool sinister types. Penelope Cruz is too good to be true. I expected more out of their characters than what ended up in the final edit we saw, which was disappointing.I found the character of Brad Pitt the most interesting one of all. Every time Westray was on the screen, the story perks up and even the long conversations he has with the Counselor actually made sense. Too bad Pitt was only in about a third of the film or less.The Counselor comes across as a slick action-filled crime caper film at first glance. However as you watch it, you will realize that it was actually mostly long-winded, unrealistically philosophical conversations and monologues from the most unlikely of characters. I think the main problem is the turgid and generally lifeless script which the talents of the director nor the actors could save.

If you are in it for Nicholas Cage or airplanes, it will assault all you know of them. I have no idea why we continued to watch, it was insulting and base when it came to the end. The beginning starts with the lead female getting to up in Christian grills. It was a bit unnecessary, but it serves as a HA! Told you so moment at the end when it turned out that this was a rapture film. Which is not bad, but there is just nothing to it. Users review: Lone Survivor (2013)A more-or-less accurate depiction of four highly capable SEAL soldiers dropped into enemy territory in Afghanistan. They were then discovered and attacked by dozens of area Taliban. The recreation is riveting, disturbing in its intensity, and eye-opening. Whatever you feel about the war there, or even about soldiers killing other soldiers, you end up admiring the sheer abilities of these fit, smart, determined men.And only one survives (this is told in the title). So you go into it knowing it will end badly, and also that one of them (probably Mark Wahlberg, the biggest name here) will make it. If the fighting, which makes up most of the movie in the center core of it, is seemingly endless, thats part of the point. But when it shifts to a local village near the end the tale has another kind of intensity, and a welcome change.This is straight up action material. It lacks even the layers that other movies with similar settings add (see The Hurt Locker for one example). But in a way that makes this distinctive. It moves in linear fashion through time, through the events, and so you barrel along without mental complication to the end. It forces everything on the action, and the realistic portrayal of the unbelievable hardship and pain, and death, that comes along the way.Check out the overly-long Wikipedia page on this movie for lots of facts about production, and about the liberties they took with the facts. Or just watch the movie knowing that there are the usual permitted changes that dramatization requires. Even as pure fiction the movie has enough kinetic and heroic acts to succeed on its own terms.

Users review: Right now, Im still trying really hard to find out one bad thing from the X-Men movie Ive just seen: The characters maybe ? No: every single character is perfectly represented,interpreted (in particularly with a stunning James McAvoy and an impressive Michael Fassbender) and useful to the story. Maybe the plot then ? No: youll get easily into it, because it is very well written for the screen, meaning you will be transported as Bryan Singer seems to know perfectly how to put in place a very cinematic puzzle. Emotions ? You will get some, as long as you loved the original X-Men characters. The soundtrack ? It is spotless and superbly fitting. Visual Effects ? Always there when we want them to be, and not when it is unnecessary. Action scenes ? Youll be amazed, thrilled and captivated when you will realize that every single scene has a purpose, whether it has some action or simple emotions and characters development.All these qualities put together are forming a very classical but excellent & accomplished movie, completed by a skilled sense of cinematic continuity that we didnt have since Singer left the franchise (at least until X-Men First Class). In other words, you should not be afraid to see this movie, because if you dont want to be disappointed, I can tell : you wont be. But is the future of this X-Men movie truly set ? This is something youll have to figure out by yourselves, and this until the very end of the credits...
